Statement on Hermann Gmeiner—the current namesake of our school

We feel it is our responsibility today to clearly address and respond to the serious allegations against our namesake, Hermann Gmeiner (1919–1986), which have recently come to light. According to statements by the international organization SOS Children’s Villages International, eight documented cases of violence against children have been cited against Mr. Gmeiner, committed between the 1950s and 1980s in Austria.

As a school, we bear a great responsibility for the protection and well-being of all children. The allegations against Mr. Gmeiner are in complete contradiction to our guiding principle of providing children with a safe, supportive, and respectful learning and living environment. Therefore, we would like to clarify the following:

  1. Distancing Ourselves from the School’s Namesake
We expressly distance ourselves from Mr. Gmeiner’s actions and do not defend his behavior. The dignity, protection, and well-being of children are our top priority.
  2. Review of the School Name
The faculty has jointly decided to seriously consider the issue of renaming the school. We will provide updates on the next steps and actively involve the school community.
  3. Recognition of Current Values and Work
We emphasize that our school is not defined solely by its namesake.
Rather, it is all teachers, staff, students, and parents who shape our school through their daily interactions. We wish to continue creating an environment grounded in respect, trust, and care.

In conclusion, we would like to say: Our school stands for education, community, and a positive, life-affirming attitude. The painful allegations against Mr. Gmeiner deeply shake us, but we make it clear: We shape our school in the here and now, with clear values, mutual respect, and the goal of doing justice to every child.
